TUCKAHOE

Tuckahoe School is holding a school-wide assembly on October 2, 2009 to promote a voluntary "brown-out" in their district on October 24th from 10:00 a.m. to noon. This assembly will also encourage participation in a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle program at the school. See attached Powerpoint presentation for more information, or contact Wendy Meyer at 631-283-3550, x313 or wmeyer@tuckahoe.k12.ny.us. Tuckahoe has also developed a wellness policy that includes healthy food choices and the use of non-toxic cleaning, maintenance and art supplies on school grounds.

BRIDGEHAMPTON

Bridgehampton School has adopted organic lawn care on the school grounds and has created composting bins to recycle kitchen waste from the cafeteria. The school has a solar irrigation system, including a rain water collection system to reuse rain water that allows them to avoid pumping water from limited underground aquifers. An edible schoolyard allows Bridgehampton students to eat the food that was produced right outside of their classrooms.

HAMPTON BAYS

Hampton Bays Middle School is now offering a "Green Technology" course to teach students about emerging technologies that work with the natural environment. Their "Change for Change" program collects pennies to show that many small changes can add up over time to a larger impact. In the spring of 2010, Hampton Bays plans to host an Earth Expo co-sponsored by GoSolar. Rain Barrels will be installed on school grounds to collect rain water for reuse in irrigation. Environmentally-damaging styrofoam trays have been eliminated from their cafeteria and the Earth Club is working to implement some more "green" changes in the future. Hampton Bays Middle School will be participating in a week of climate action from October 19th - 24th. The following events will take place that week:
  • Movie Monday, October 19th: All classes will view 2 short video clips in the above attached Powerpoint on Climate Change
  • Trayless Tuesday, Oct 20th:  The Middle School will go trayless at lunch in an effort to reduce our waste.
  • Writing Wednesday, Oct 21st:  ELA classes will write 350 letters to area restaurants to either thank them for using biodegradable products or to urge them to use alternative products to polystyrene styrofoam cups and carry-out containers.
  • Thoughtful Thursday, Oct 22nd:  We are urging students to carpool or walk/bike with a friend to school.
  • Friday, Oct. 23rd:  Kick-off to the NYS DEC Poster Contest and encourage all teachers to turn off all electronics and chargers for the weekend in preparation for the HB Brown-out from 8-9 pm as part of the Great Greening of Southampton.

SOUTHAMPTON

Southampton Intermediate School has created a "R3 Club" to raise awareness of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling in the schools and surrounding neighborhoods. An arboretum has been set up on the school grounds and trees have been planted on campus as part of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City America program.
